Apify Alternatives: 5 Options If Actors Are Not the Fit
Stay on Apify when you need store actors or custom long-running jobs. Switch when the constraint is different: hosted Markdown for agents (Firecrawl), a classic scrape API (ScraperAPI, ZenRows, or ScrapingBee), or proxy/unlocker infrastructure (Bright Data or Oxylabs).
- Stay, official Apify prices checked November 6, 2026: Free $0 / $5 included usage; Starter $19 ($17 annual) / $19 included; Scale $199 ($179) / $199 included. Unused usage expires. Most store actors are pay-per-event; the vendor’s Instagram example is $2.30 per 1,000 results.
- Five leave-path groups, not five cheaper $19 stickers. Firecrawl Hobby $19, ZenRows Build $19, ScrapingBee Hobby $19, and Apify Starter $19 are four units.
- Pairwise already published: Apify vs Firecrawl and ScrapingBee vs Apify.

1. When to stay — and when a different door is the right one
People who search “Apify alternatives” usually already know the platform exists. They want a leave path that matches a constraint actors do not cover, or confirmation that they should stay. This page does that job. It does not replace the Apify review.
Stay when…
- You need a store actor that already exists, or you will write and schedule your own.
- You accept prepaid usage plus event prices, compute units, and proxy line items.
- The pain is a number on Apify’s own ladder (Free’s $5, Starter’s $19, the public overage cap, concurrency) rather than a new output contract.
Leave when…
- You need Markdown or JSON for agents from a hosted context API.
- You wanted a scrape-API credit pack, not a platform.
- You wanted to buy residential GB as infrastructure rather than as an actor add-on.
UA did not create test accounts. Prices below come from each vendor’s official pricing materials, checked November 6, 2026. Apify itself has no affiliate button here. Firecrawl links are affiliate links because that program is validated.
2. Job matrix
| Job | First place to look | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Store actors and custom jobs | Apify | That is the product. See the review. |
| Hosted Markdown / JSON for agents | Firecrawl | Different category. Apify vs Firecrawl. |
| Classic scrape API with SERP credit rules | ScraperAPI | Google/Bing 25, LinkedIn 30, JS included. |
| Weighted scrape toolkit | ZenRows | One wallet at 1 / 5 / 10 / 25 credits, plus Browser minutes and residential GB. |
| Thin hosted scrape API | ScrapingBee | Hobby $19 / 75,000 credits; JS = 5. ScrapingBee vs Apify. |
| Proxy / unlocker infrastructure | Bright Data or Oxylabs | Bright Data vs Oxylabs. |
3. Staying on Apify
Stay if the constraint is still “I need actors.” Official entry: Free $5 of usage; Starter $19/month ($17 annual display, $204/year versus $228 paid monthly) with $19 included; Scale $199 ($179 annual display) with $199 included. Unused prepaid usage expires. The reasons people incorrectly leave are usually billing misunderstandings: they treated $19 as a flat scrape budget, they skipped the actor’s event price, they compared unused-usage expiry to a vendor that documents something else, or they emptied Free’s $5 and assumed the category failed.
Two overflows that are upgrades, not migrations:
- The official Instagram example at $2.30 per 1,000 results prices 10,000 results at $23 — $4 over Starter’s prepaid slice, inside the public overage description (at most $100). That is Starter plus overage, not a scrape-API reason.
- A 1,000-CU compute-only month is $200 at Starter’s $0.20 rate and cannot fit the public overage cap ($19 + $100 = $119, or 595 CU). That is Scale ($199 prepaid at $0.16/CU holds 1,243.75 CU), not evidence you needed Firecrawl.
4. The five leave paths
1. Firecrawl — when the job is LLM context
Official hosted plans: Free $0 / 1,000 credits; Hobby $19 or $16 annual display / 5,000; Standard $99 or $83 / 100,000. Basic scrape is 1 credit; JSON scrape is 5. Ten thousand Markdown pages overflow Hobby (5,000) and fit Standard at $99; the same pages as JSON are 50,000 credits and still Standard. If your next hop is a prompt, a chunker, or MCP, this is the leave path — not a “cheaper Apify.” Details: Apify vs Firecrawl.
2. ScraperAPI — scrape-API packs and SERP multipliers
Hobby $49 ($44.10 annual) / 100,000 credits / 20 threads; Startup $149 / 1,000,000 / 50; Business $299 / 3,000,000 / 100. Standard page 1 credit; Amazon 5; Google and Bing 25; LinkedIn 30. JS rendering and premium proxies are included in the plan fee. Credits do not roll over. Leave here when you wanted a credit pack with published hostname weights, not when a store actor overflowed Starter. See ScraperAPI review.
3. ZenRows — weighted toolkit
Free 5,000 credits; Build monthly from $19 / 45,000 credits (annual display from $16). Weights: standard 1, JS 5, premium 10, protected 25. Browser = bandwidth + 5 credits per minute; residential = 25,000 credits per GB. Failed requests are not charged; 404 and 410 bill. Leave here if you needed those extra meters on the same wallet. See ZenRows review.
4. ScrapingBee — thin hosted scrape API
Hobby $19 / 75,000 credits / 25 concurrent; Freelance $49 / 250,000 / 50; Startup $99 / 1,000,000 / 100. Requests start at 1 credit; JS 5; premium 10 or 25 depending on JS. Credits last one month and do not roll over. Ten thousand standard pages are 10,000 credits and fit Hobby; ten thousand premium+JS pages are 250,000 credits and fit Freelance exactly. Pairwise: ScrapingBee vs Apify.
5. Bright Data or Oxylabs — when you wanted infrastructure
Bright Data residential PAYG listed at $8/GB, shown at $4.00/GB with named coupon RESIGB50; committed rows from $499 / 141 GB. KYC before Residential or Mobile. Oxylabs: one shared credit subscription (Starter $15, Basic $100, Flexible $500, Enterprise from $2,500); residential from $6/GB on the lower columns. Unused Oxylabs credits expire at cycle end except on upgrade. Pairwise: Bright Data vs Oxylabs. Apify’s own residential table ($8/GB on Free and Starter, $7.50 on Scale, $7 on Business) is an add-on meter, not a reason to treat Apify as a proxy vendor — or to treat a proxy vendor as a drop-in actor platform.
5. The same 10,000 pages, five different meters
Use this as a compass, not a bake-off. “10,000 pages” is not one bill.
- Apify: no honest flat number. Starter is $19 of usage. The Instagram example at $2.30 / 1,000 results would price 10,000 results at $23. A usage-priced crawler depends on RAM, duration, and proxy; we will not invent that CU burn.
- Firecrawl Markdown: 10,000 credits → Standard at $99 (Hobby holds only 5,000). JSON: 50,000 credits, still Standard. You also get the context-API product, which is the point of leaving.
- ScraperAPI generic HTML: 10,000 credits fit Hobby at $49. Google at 25×: 250,000 credits fit Startup at $149 (1,000,000). JS does not add a 5× on top; it is included.
- ZenRows standard: 10,000 credits fit Build B1 at $19 (45,000). Protected at 25: 250,000 credits → Launch L1 at $69 exactly.
- ScrapingBee standard: 10,000 credits → Hobby at $19. JS: 50,000 credits, still Hobby. Premium+JS at 25: 250,000 credits → Freelance at $49 exactly.
The compass does not say Apify “loses” at $23 — that $23 only applies if your 10,000 items are Instagram-example results. Ten thousand Markdown pages are a known $99 Firecrawl step. Ten thousand Google pages are a known $149 ScraperAPI step. Switching without naming the URL class and the output contract is how teams pay twice and rebuild pagination they had been buying as an actor.
6. How to diagnose the switch
- Write down the job in one sentence that names the output — Markdown for a prompt, HTML you parse, a scheduled dataset, or residential GB. If the output is Markdown-for-agents, the leave path is Firecrawl even if Apify Starter looks cheaper than Firecrawl Standard.
- Open the named actor page and convert its published event or usage model at your volume (review scenarios A–C). If the number fits Starter plus the public overage cap, stay.
- Separate “this actor is expensive” from “actors are the wrong product.” Another store actor, or Scale when Starter’s cap cannot hold the CU, is still Apify.
- Only then pick a leave-path group from the matrix. Do not compare four $19 stickers.
- Budget the rewrite. Moving to a scrape API means you own login, pagination, scheduling, and storage that the actor was doing. Moving to Firecrawl means you accept that vendor’s credit weights (1 for scrape, 5 for JSON) and hosted output, not raw HTML you already parsed.
7. Pitfalls when you switch
- Comparing $19 stickers across Firecrawl, ZenRows, ScrapingBee, and Apify.
- Moving to a scrape API and then rebuilding the actor’s login, pagination, and scheduling yourself — unless that rewrite was the point.
- Moving to Firecrawl for raw HTML to “save money,” or to a proxy network because Free’s $5 ran out.
- Treating 10,000 Instagram-example results ($23 on Apify) as comparable to 10,000 Markdown pages ($99 on Firecrawl) without noticing they are different outputs.
- Assuming another vendor’s failed requests are free just because one scrape toolkit documents that rule.
- Leaving because a single actor run overflowed Starter’s $19. That is overage or Scale, or a different actor page, not proof a credit pack is the same product.
Switch when the job changed. An actor that overflowed Starter’s $19 is usually an upgrade, a limit you set, or a different actor — not evidence that a credit pack replaces the platform.
8. Decision
| If this is the constraint… | Do this |
|---|---|
| Actors still match the job, and the pain is $5, $19, or concurrency | Stay on Apify. Recalculate the named actor before you migrate. |
| ~10,000 Instagram-example results ($23) | Starter plus a small overage — not a leave path |
| You need hosted LLM context (10,000 Markdown pages → Firecrawl Standard $99) | Evaluate Firecrawl. |
| You need a scrape-API credit pack for generic HTML | Evaluate ScrapingBee Hobby ($19 / 10,000 standard credits) or ScraperAPI Hobby ($49) |
| Those pages are Google, and you want a published 25× weight | Evaluate ScraperAPI Startup at $149 for 250,000 credits |
| You need a toolkit wallet (Browser minutes, residential GB as credits) | Evaluate ZenRows |
| You need proxies / an unlocker | Evaluate Bright Data or Oxylabs |
Do not switch by default. Switch when the job changed. If the job did not change, the cheaper-looking row elsewhere is probably measuring a different unit.
9. FAQ
What is the best Apify alternative?
There is not one. Firecrawl when you need LLM context. A scrape API when you want credit packs. Bright Data or Oxylabs when you want infrastructure.
Is Firecrawl cheaper than Apify?
Not as a rule. See Apify vs Firecrawl — 10,000 Markdown pages are a known $99 Firecrawl step; Apify’s number depends on the actor. At the official Instagram example, 10,000 results are $23, which is a different output.
Should I leave Apify if Starter’s $19 ran out?
Usually no. Read the actor page, add the public overage cap (at most $100 on Starter), and only then consider Scale. Leave if you never wanted actors.
Do you earn a commission on these alternatives?
Firecrawl links on this page may earn a commission. Other tools have no live affiliate button; hidden placeholders sit in the HTML for later.
