Firecrawl Alternatives: When to Switch

Direct answer

Stay on Firecrawl when the job is hosted Markdown or structured data for LLM and agent workflows and you do not want to run the crawler. Switch when the constraint is different: self-host the crawler (Crawl4AI), collect HTML through a classic scrape API (ScraperAPI, ZenRows, or ScrapingBee), or run actors and store scrapers (Apify).

  • Stay, official Firecrawl prices checked November 6, 2026: Free $0 / 1,000 credits; Hobby $19/month or $16/month billed annually for 5,000 credits; Standard $99 or $83 for 100,000 credits.
  • Switch by job, not by sticker. A $10 or $19 alternative is not cheaper if it does not return the context your pipeline needs, and a Firecrawl credit is not a ScraperAPI credit.
  • Pairwise deep-dives: vs Crawl4AI, vs ScraperAPI, vs ZenRows, Apify vs Firecrawl. This page is the landscape, not a five-way bake-off.

1. When to stay — and when a different door is the right one

People who search “Firecrawl alternatives” usually already know what Firecrawl is. They want a leave path that matches a constraint the hosted context API does not cover, or they want confirmation that they should stay. This page does that job. It does not replace the Firecrawl review (is it worth buying?) or Firecrawl pricing (which plan?).

Stay when…

  • Your pipeline needs Markdown or structured fields from a hosted API.
  • You want scrape, crawl, map, search, interact, and MCP without running browsers.
  • Published Firecrawl credits fit the volume, once you count JSON and search correctly.

Leave when…

  • The crawler must run on machines you control.
  • The job is raw HTML at scrape-API economics, with geotargeting or SERP-heavy credit rules.
  • You need an actor marketplace, custom long-running jobs, or store scrapers other people maintain.

UA did not create test accounts or rank vendors by success rate. Prices and product claims below come from each vendor’s official pricing or docs pages, checked November 6, 2026. Mentions of ScraperAPI, ZenRows, ScrapingBee, Apify, and Crawl4AI are not sponsored. There are no outbound vendor links on this page.

2. Job matrix

Pick the row that matches the work, then open the dedicated comparison if one exists. Do not pick a row because the monthly sticker is smaller.

3. Staying on Firecrawl

Stay if the constraint that sent you here is “I want someone else to turn pages into LLM context.” Official hosted prices checked November 6, 2026: Free at $0 with 1,000 credits and 2 concurrent browsers; Hobby at $19/month or $16/month billed annually ($190/year) for 5,000 credits and 5 browsers; Standard at $99 or $83 ($990/year) for 100,000 credits and 25 browsers; Growth at $399 or $333 ($3,990/year) for 500,000 / 50; Scale at $749 or $599 ($7,190/year) for 1,000,000 / 100.

The reasons people incorrectly leave Firecrawl are usually billing misunderstandings, not product mismatches: JSON costs 5 credits per page, unused plan credits do not roll over except on documented Scale/Enterprise rules, Free has no pay-as-you-go (HTTP 402), and a captured 403 or 404 still bills when a document comes back. If those are your frustrations, read the pricing page before you migrate. The same advice applies if you arrived here after hitting Hobby’s 5 concurrent browsers or Free’s 10 scrapes-a-minute cap: that is an upgrade question inside Firecrawl, documented on the pricing page, not evidence that a scrape API is a better product.

The reasons people correctly leave are category mismatches: HTML-only collection, an on-prem crawler mandate, or an actor marketplace. Those are the leave paths below.

4. The main leave paths

Crawl4AI — when the crawler must be yours

Crawl4AI’s official docs describe an Apache-2.0 crawler that turns sites into LLM-ready Markdown. Self-host with pip install -U crawl4ai, then crawl4ai-setup, and run AsyncWebCrawler — or Docker. You pay your own machines, browsers, and proxies. That is the honest alternative when Firecrawl’s hosted model is the blocker, not its Markdown output.

The same vendor also sells Crawl4AI Cloud: 1,000 free credits a month, no card, 10 requests a minute and 2 at a time; Starter $10/month for 10,000 credits (120/min, 10 concurrent, extra credits $1 per 1,000); Builder $99 / 125,000 / 600/min / 20 / $0.79 per 1,000; Scale $499 / 750,000 / 1,500/min / 50 / $0.67 per 1,000. Official site hint: 1 credit = $0.001, a page at 0.5, search at 1, a real browser at 1, a hard site at 2. Live /v1/prices matches base scrape/extract at 0.50 plus engine multipliers. Their table is marked as a soft launch: prices and the free credit can change; purchased credits never expire. A Firecrawl credit is not a Crawl4AI credit. Full comparison: Firecrawl vs Crawl4AI.

ScraperAPI — when you want a classic scrape API

ScraperAPI’s official pricing page (checked November 6, 2026) is built around API credits for fetching pages, not around Markdown-for-agents as the headline product. Published start: a 7-day trial with 5,000 credits and no card, plus a free plan with 1,000 credits and 5 concurrent threads. Paid entry is Hobby at $49/month, or $44.10 billed annually, for 100,000 credits and 20 threads with US and EU geotargeting. Startup is $149 ($134.10 annual) for 1,000,000 credits and 50 threads; Business $299 ($269.10) for 3,000,000 credits, 100 threads, and global geotargeting. Higher published tiers include Scaling $475 ($427.50) / 5,000,000 / 200 threads with pay-as-you-go; Professional $975 ($877.50) / 10,500,000 / 300; Advanced $1,975 ($1,777.50) / 21,500,000 / 500; Enterprise custom from 22 million credits. Annual billing is 10% off.

Official credit rules that matter when you leave Firecrawl for HTML work: a standard page is 1 credit; Amazon is 5; Google and Bing (including subdomains) are 25; LinkedIn is 30; Cloudflare, Datadome, or PerimeterX bypass adds 10. JavaScript rendering and premium proxies are included on all plans. Credits do not roll over. Running over concurrency returns HTTP 429 without an extra credit charge. A 7-day no-questions refund is documented. Go to Firecrawl vs ScraperAPI for the pairwise decision, not for a second copy of this paragraph.

ZenRows — when you want one toolkit credit balance

ZenRows positions a scraping toolkit with one credit wallet across fetch modes rather than a single “LLM context API” headline. Official pricing page plus the page’s schema.org JSON (checked November 6, 2026; schema dateModified 2026-10-13): Free at $0 with 5,000 credits a month, no card, 5 concurrent requests, no rollover, and no top-ups. Paid catalogs display annual monthly rates first (Build from $16, Launch from $58, Growth from $166, Scale from $458). Monthly billing is higher: Build $19–$39 (B1 $19 / 45,000 credits, B2 $29 / 80,000, B3 $39 / 120,000); Launch $69–$129 (L1 $69 / 250,000, L2 $99 / 500,000, L3 $129 / 700,000); Growth $199–$399; Scale $549–$2,999. Annual billing is advertised as pay 10 months, get 12.

Official credit weights: standard request 1 credit; JavaScript rendering 5; premium proxies 10; both together (protected) 25. Residential bandwidth is listed at 25,000 credits per GB. Browser sessions bill bandwidth plus 5 credits per minute. Failed requests are not charged; 404 and 410 count as successful/usable. Extract is currently described as free on top of Fetch. Adaptive Stealth mode=auto starts light and bills only the setup that worked. Pairwise decision: Firecrawl vs ZenRows.

ScrapingBee — when you want a thin hosted scrape API

ScrapingBee’s official pricing page (checked November 6, 2026) is another hosted scrape API, not an actor platform and not a Markdown-first agent API. Published standard plans: Hobby $19/month for 75,000 API credits and 25 concurrent requests; Freelance $49 / 250,000 / 50; Startup $99 / 1,000,000 / 100; Business $249 / 3,000,000 / 200; Business+ $599 / 8,000,000 / 400. Higher enterprise rows continue upward from $999/month (14,000,000 credits). API credits are valid for one month and do not roll over. Requests start at 1 credit each; JavaScript rendering costs 5 credits on a successful request; premium proxies cost 10 or 25 credits depending on whether JS rendering is on. JS rendering, rotating and premium proxies, geotargeting, screenshots, and extraction rules are listed as included across the standard plans. There is no dedicated Firecrawl vs ScrapingBee page yet; if this is the category you want, also read our ScrapingBee review and Firecrawl vs ScraperAPI as the closest pairwise analogue.

Apify — when you need actors and a store

Apify is a platform. Official pricing (checked November 6, 2026): Free at $0 with $5 of included usage; Starter at $19/month, or $17/month billed annually, with $19 of included usage; Scale at $199 ($179 annual display) with $199 included; Business at $999 ($899) with $999 included. Annual billing is 10% off. Unused prepaid usage expires at the end of the cycle. Paid plans continue on pay-as-you-go overage up to a limit you set (Starter’s public cap is described as at most $100 of usage).

Most Apify Store actors use pay-per-event pricing listed on each actor page. Pay-per-usage actors and your own actors bill platform usage instead, including compute units (1 CU = 1 GB of RAM for one hour) at $0.20 per CU on Free and Starter, $0.16 on Scale, and $0.13 on Business. Proxy and storage have their own line items. That is a different bill from “1 credit per Markdown page.” If the reason you searched “Firecrawl alternatives” is “I need a store of scrapers and custom jobs,” Apify is the leave path — details in Apify vs Firecrawl.

5. Pitfalls when you switch

  • Comparing stickers across credit systems. Firecrawl Hobby at $19 for 5,000 credits, ScraperAPI Hobby at $49 for 100,000 credits, ZenRows Build at $19 for 45,000 credits, ScrapingBee Hobby at $19 for 75,000 credits, and Crawl4AI Cloud Starter at $10 for 10,000 credits are not five prices for the same unit.
  • Leaving because JSON felt expensive, then paying a scrape API plus your own Markdown conversion and anti-bot stack. Count the engineering, not just the endpoint.
  • Picking Crawl4AI Cloud because $10 is smaller than $19 without reading their credit schedule or the soft-launch note. The self-host path is the cleaner “leave Firecrawl” story when the issue is control, not the sticker.
  • Moving to Apify for a simple Markdown scrape. You inherit compute units, actor event prices, and platform usage. That is correct for store/custom jobs and heavy if you only needed /scrape.
  • Assuming another vendor’s failed requests are free just because ZenRows documents that rule. ScraperAPI and Firecrawl each document their own treatment of errors and empty responses. Read the billing page you are moving to.

6. Decision

If this is the constraint…Do this
You want hosted LLM context and the credits fitStay on Firecrawl. Use the review to confirm fit and the pricing page to pick a plan.
The crawler cannot leave your networkEvaluate Crawl4AI self-host (Apache-2.0). Read Firecrawl vs Crawl4AI.
You need HTML collection with scrape-API credit packsEvaluate ScraperAPI, ZenRows, or ScrapingBee against the job. Start with the two pairwise pages we already publish.
You need actors, a scraper store, or custom long-running jobsEvaluate Apify via Apify vs Firecrawl.

Our recommendation if you landed here from a Firecrawl page: do not switch by default. Switch when the job changed. If the job did not change, the cheaper-looking row in someone else’s comparison is probably measuring a different unit.

7. FAQ

What is the best Firecrawl alternative?

There is not one. Crawl4AI is the alternative when you must self-host. ScraperAPI, ZenRows, and ScrapingBee are alternatives when you want a scrape API. Apify is the alternative when you want a platform and a store. Match the job.

Is Crawl4AI cheaper than Firecrawl?

Self-host software is documented as free; you pay compute. Crawl4AI Cloud starts at $10/month for 10,000 credits, but those credits are not Firecrawl credits, and the cloud table carries a soft-launch warning. See the dedicated comparison.

Should I switch if Firecrawl JSON feels expensive?

Recalculate first: JSON is 5 credits per page on Firecrawl’s billing docs. Then compare that invoice to the engineering of Markdown-converting a scrape API yourself. If the job was never JSON-for-agents, switching categories may be right.

Do you earn a commission on these alternatives?

Not at the time this page was written. Only Firecrawl links on this page are affiliate links. Hidden placeholders sit in the HTML for programs that are not validated yet; they are not visible and they do not point at live vendor URLs.

Where is Bright Data in this list?

Bright Data is a proxy and web-data platform, not the first leave path for an LLM crawl API. If that is your category, use our separate Bright Data pages rather than stretching this landscape.
